From the Coordination Team
By David Heinjus and Carlyn Mellors
Welcome to the February edition of the Bestprac e-newsletter. Time seems to have flown since the January edition. The Bestprac coordination team has been busily beginning the Caring for Our Country project, Australian Pastoral Property Innovation Manual, and developing FarmReady Industry Grant applications.
In this edition of the newsletter we hear from Susan Carn with her monthly weather update. We also begin to explore innovative options for fly control and learn what is involved in Business Planning. For those of you in the Cunnamulla area; there is a business planning workshop being held in February. This is an initiative of the Leading Sheep and Making More from Sheep programs.
What does the new Caring for Our Country Project mean for Bestprac?
This project, Australian Pastoral Property Innovation Manual, aims to identify and document practical on-property innovations that have improved NRM and/or production outcomes and can be easily adopted by other arid zone rangeland pastoralists. The innovations will be identified through group-based on-property sessions throughout the project. For existing Bestprac groups, there is funding for two face to face meetings prior to 30 June 2009. Facilitators will be in contact with groups shortly to arrange meetings. These sessions are open to non-members.
Within the project framework, there is also funding for members and non-members to participate in Innovation Road Trips to visit other innovative producers and to develop plans of how the ideas can be adopted into their businesses. We are aiming to have two road trips in SA, Qld and NSW and one in WA. Group facilitators will be responsible for working with groups to design and plan the road trips.
The output of this project will be a Pastoral Innovation Manual documenting the innovations discussed during the meetings and Road Trips. This will be a great resource tool for pastoral producers throughout Australia.
For more information about the project, please contact your group facilitator or Carlyn Mellors at Rural Directions Pty Ltd on 08 8842 1103.
