Dubbo Innovation Forum Report

Posted by Bestprac on Sep 14 2009

Dubbo 24 August 2009

Bestprac facilitator, Mark Gardner and his team from Vanguard Business Services coordinated the organisation of the Dubbo based Bestprac Innovations Forum. This forum was open to all Bestprac and non Bestprac members and was co-funded from AWI and the Australian Pastoral Property Innovation Manual project (DAFF, Caring for our Country). The forum was attended by 51 people, a good mix of Bestprac and non Bestprac members. Attendees travelled from locations such as Coonamble, Quambone, Condobolin, Tullamore, Young, Guerie, Wellington, Peak Hill and Warren.

Innovation was the theme of the forum. Producer guest speaker, Matthew McKenzie, Coonamble, NSW who discussed grazing management and their cropping program which also involves pasture cropping identified that ‘all farmers are innovators’, an innovation is ‘an idea that is successfully applied to your situation’, with the willingness to ‘try it more than once’. For the McKenzies, innovation within their business has been more about a ‘process, not necessarily an invention of something new’.

The feedback from the forum was very positive. Producers indicated that they enjoyed the format, being a mix of presentations from the experts in the morning, as well as presentations from landholders, giving a practical overview and their first hand experiences, many of which have profiled their innovations in the Australian Pastoral Property Innovation Manual. The session by Rod Fardell on health and well being was mentioned as being of relevance and often overlooked in day to day business management. Rod worked through a 100 point health check with the participants and demonstrated some simple exercises which producers can be doing at home or in the paddock when they have a few moments. Rod highlighted the importance of looking after yourself, keeping in mind you are the most important piece of machinery/equipment in your business.
