Visual Classing Merino Sheep by Australian Wool Innovation

Posted by Bestprac on Jun 03 2014

AWI has released a publication called ‘Visual Classing Merino Sheep’. This publication lists the traits important to classing, which characteristics are desirable in the trait and explains the economic importance of each.

How this document can help breeders:

  • Visual sheep classing is practiced by all breeders and is essential to the quality of a woolgrower's flock and enterprise profitability.
  • In essence, it is the wool features of the Merino that sets it apart from other breeds. In particular, the Australian Merino is unique in possessing a skin that produces an exceptional number of fine secondary wool fibres.
  • A list of traits, the characteristics to look for, and the economic importance of each trait is tabled in the document.
