Flystrike workshops target SA pastoral producers

Posted by Bestprac on Jul 04 2012

South Australian pastoral zone sheep producers are improving their flystrike management practices following a series of industry workshops held over the last six months.

Melrose workshop participantsWith the support of the Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation (Sheep CRC), four flystrike management workshops were delivered by Rural Solutions SA (RSSA) in December 2011 and March 2012 in the Upper North of South Australia.

Together with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and Landmark, RSSA targeted pastoral sheep producers with workshops at Iron Knob and Hawker in December, and at Melrose and Orroroo in March.

Participants at the Iron Knob workshopThe half-day workshops successfully combined the knowledge of local RSSA operators and third-party hosts Landmark, who worked together to determine the right timing and location of the events. For the second series of workshops, the local Upper North Farming Systems group was also an eager contributor.

The program was a combination of workshop style presentations indoors and practical sheep assessment outdoors, with SARDI supplying sheep suitable for demonstrating wrinkle score and the benefits of genetic selection for plainer-bodied sheep.

Two regional chemical company representatives from Novartis and Coopers were on-hand to discuss and demonstrate chemical treatment strategies.

Producers who attended delivered feedback that the workshops were highly useful for improving the management of flystrike in their sheep flock.
