Photo by Liz MeechamFunded by the Australian Wool Education Trust, the aim of the seminar is educate the students on the challenges faced by woolgrowers who are aiming to run productive merinos on their properties in the semi arid Hay environment.

Starting at 9.30 am, the speakers include Greg Curran, the NSW DPI Regional Veterinary Officer based at Broken Hill.  Greg has spent decades working with landholders in remote NSW.  Greg is speaking on his current, groundbreaking, research on the effects of heat waves on the fertility of merino ewes. Sharing the wool board with Greg is Hay landholder, Jim Crossley, from “Toms Lake”, at Booligal, who will share his experience on his success with ruthlessly culling ewes for fertility over the past 25 years. This has resulted in a flock that now has an average lamb marking percentage of 125%. In addition, Magnus Aitken, Manager of Steam Plains at Conargo, will speak about his success of shearing 30 000 sheep every six months and his complimentary paddock rotation grazing regime. Paul Swan, from AWI, will finish up with a look at the future direction for the Australian wool clip. Hay landholder and now Acting NFF President Duncan Fraser, will also address the audience on his personal journey to the highest agri-political position in the country.

The seminar with lunch included  (cost $25 inclusive)  will finish at 2.00 pm and landholders are asked to contact Sally Ware, from NSW DPI, on mobile 0429307627 or Peter Wynn, from Charles Sturt Uni, on 69334479 (Trish Schipp) or his mobile 0428679954, if they wish to attend, so catering can be organised.
